The Hanoverian
OverviewCountry of Origin: Germany
Date Founded: 1735 The Hanoverian has been renowned for generations as one of the most successful and prominent riding horses in the world. The Hanoverian is also known for it's good temperament, athleticism, beauty and grace. HistoryThe breed originated in northern Germany in the state of Lower Saxony, the former kingdom of Hannover, where a flourishing horse-breeding industry has existed for 400 years. The Hanoverian first began when the State Stud at Celle was founded in 1735. Stallions were purchased for mixed agriculture and harness work as well as cavalry mounts and local mares were refined with Thoroughbred, Holsteiner, Andalusian, Prussian and Mecklenburg stock. The first official Hanoverian studbook was published in 1888. The Hanoverian became one of the most popular breeds in Europe for coach and military work. After World War II, the breed incorporated Thoroughbred, Anglo-Arabian and occassionally Trakehner horses to refine the breed into the increasingly popular sport horse. The current goal is to produce a versatile horse with light, elastic, ground-covering gaits.
