The HOLSTEINER
OverviewCountry of Origin: Germany
Date Founded: 1891 A large and extremely athletic warmblood, the Holsteiner is one of the most popular breeds chosen for show jumping. However, this is a very versatile breed thus it also excels in dressage and eventing. At its core the Holsteiner is noted as a very sporty breed with a calm and willing temperament. HistoryThis breed has its origins in the Schleswig-Holstein region in northern Germany, first rising to prominence over 700 years ago. The early stock was burly and muscular, thus making it ideal for knightly mounts and cavalry. By the 19th century this early stock was refined by adding the Thoroughbred and Cleveland Bay for an elegant carriage horse with even temperament. In 1891 the studbook was formed and by 1935 the breed has it’s own verband. After WWII the breed nearly died out, but managed to make a huge comeback during the 60s and 70s using very heavy Thoroughbred influences. Today the Holsteiner aims to become a beautiful and versatile sport horse, with the even temperament of the original-type warmblood influence.
